Salmon is a primary source of life for Indigenous people on the west coast. Strict conservation has traditionally been practiced to ensure the sustainability of the resource. The first salmon ceremony is practiced by communities up and down the coast. In this ritual the salmon are welcomed and thanked for returning. Spiritual songs and prayers are offered and the first salmon caught is shared.
