Northwest Coast Native people are sometimes referred to as ‘Salmon People.’   This recognizes their deep connection and traditional dependance on salmon. Coastal People were able to evolve their wonderful cultures and arts in large part due to the abundance of and easy access to food.

A reciprocal relationship was established. Indigenous People cared for the salmon and fished sustainably to ensure future returns.  Stories tell of the rivers being so full of fish you could walk across them.  Today overfishing has brought many runs to the brink of extinction.  Communities are working to reverse this process.
