14" square plus the strap. This is a hand spun wool bag, woven on a back strap loom. The main symbol in the middle was done by cross stitching but the two bands down each side were woven into the bag itself.
Francisco and Velina made these bags. They are very traditional. Every two or three years they make the long treck from the Sierra to the coast to sell their wares. The live in an extraordinarily reclusive village called la Tapia which is almost 2 days by foot from San Andres Cohamita the main Huichol ceremonial center, which itself is isolated high in the mountains.
