10" by 10", handcrafted birchbark. The Northwest Territories is home to many artisans that have been hand crafting birchbark for generations. Once used for storing food, birchbark is now used to create one of a kind pieces of art.
An individual birch bark basket takes many hours to make. The bark is folded and shaped into baskets. The baskets are stitched together using spruce root and sinew. They are considered collector’s items and are highly valued throughout Canada and internationally.
