The Octopus is a transformer.  It can change colour, shape and texture.  It can travel between this world and the spirit world.  It is a helper to shamans, a medicine animal with healing abilities and power over the weather.  It's also a protector and a symbol of wealth in Kwak'waka'wakw culture.  It stands guard at the home of Kumukwa, the chief of the undersea world.  Also known as devilfish, it can be destructive devouring canoes and whole villages.  Octopus is a crest in some cultures.

Octopus and Raven.  Raven came across a beach. Octopus woman was digging clams. Raven approached her and questioned her about what she was doing.  She ignored him.  He persisted and annoyed her.  She grabbed raven with her tentacles.  She held him till the tide came in and covered them until raven drowned.  The next day, Kingfisher discovered Raven’s body.  He used medicine, songs and dances to bring Raven back to life.  Raven never bothered Octopus Woman again.
