Native American Art - 3' Red cedar Eagle panel hand carved and painted by Coast Salish master carver, Jim Charlie.
Jim Charlie is Coast Salish but he lived and trained in Gitxsan territory for a time. His northern training is evident in this panel. The continuous primary black formline, and the secondary red formline are classic northern style designing. There are also Coast Salish elements in the carving for example the circular shapes, and the design on the shoulder joint that looks like a salmon egg. This style could be called a north south fusion.
The eagle is a great hunter. He can see 8 times further than a human, and can spot a rabbit two miles away. In Native cultures eagles are believed to be sacred because they carry messages from humans to the Creator. Eagle feathers are used in many Native ceremonies to reward courage and to connect with the spirit world.
