Cicero August was born in 1940 in Cowichan Bay. He is a Cowichan Band member. Cicero is a master carver who has been working at his craft for over forty years. He was one of the first students of Simon Charlie. His inspiration to carve came from Mungo Martin, who was responsible for bringing the art back when it was nearly lost as a culture.
Cicero's work, as carver, canoe builder, or paddle maker, reflect the traditional Coast Salish designs. Locally his carved totem poles can be viewed along the Totem Walk in Duncan, many other pieces have traveled internationally. Cicero has passed his skills down to his children, who are also recognized as carvers and jewelry makers. One of his largest carvings is a 30 ft. totem pole which stands in front of the BC Legislature Buildings, Victoria BC.
