Gilbert Daniels (Dene)

Gilbert Daniels was born and raised in Fort Smith, NWT, a small town on the Alberta border. His first experience with soapstone was when he worked the Arctic Circle as a journeyman painter in the seventies. He was amazed at what he could make out of soapstone. He did not sell any of his artwork untill he moved to Yellowknife in 1998. That was a turning point for him because there was such a demand for soapstone art that he turned his hobby into a full time profession to support himself and his family. Gilbert has sold his soapstone artwork all over Canada and the world. He likes the challenge of carving because each piece is a different, unique creation.
