Michelle Stoney’s heritage is Gitxsan and Cree. She is from Gitanmaax in Hazelton BC. Her grandfather is the late Victor Mowatt. He was a hereditary Chief and a master artist who taught Gitxsan art and culture at the high school in Hazelton. And her great uncle is the late renowned artist Earl Muldon. She was brought up with art and artists including Walter Harris, Phil Janze and arlene Ness. Michelle completed her Bachelors of fine arts degree from the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2012 and Graduated from the Northwest Coast Jewellery Arts program at NEC in 2018.
She is a painter, jeweller, carver, and a muralist. Her designs are inspired by nature and traditional Gitxsan crests. She portrays the mountains of her homeland, the forests, and the animals that inhabit them. Her signature design is ‘Stegyoden’ the large mountain beside Gitanmaax. She hides animals and faces that she sees in the mountain in her artworks.
Michelle received BC Achievement Foundation 'Emerging Artist Award'.
