The Beaver is a common crest symbol in Northwest Coast Native cultures.  In traditional stories he is one of Ravens uncles and has many roles in those stories.  The Beaver is credited with providing Raven with all the salmon that he deposited up and down the coast.  That became a primary food source for Native People.  Beaver is also cared for the water and the forests through his damn building.  Water is the source of all life.  Beavers represent abundance and environmentalism.
