The relationship between Coast Salish people and salmon is profound.  Salmon is harvested during the summer salmon runs and then preserved to supply sustenance all year round.  Traditional fishing techniques have always ensured the continuation of the resource.  But non-Native commercial fishing has led to a decline in salmon populations.   Today Coast Salish communities are working to revitalizes the traditional management that is so successful.  The traditional relationship is based on respect, reciprocity, and the interconnectedness of all life.
