The Huichol (Wixaritari in their language) are a tribe of traditional Indians who live in the Sierra Madres in Mexico.  They live by farming and gathering wild foods and medicines.  They make their own clothes, and speak their own language.  Spanish is a second language if spoken at all.  They create art based on their culture, ceremonies, helper spirits, and peyote visions.  They sell their art for money to buy the things they don't produce themselves on their land.

When the Spanish invaded Mexico, the Huichol moved into a high, inaccessible area to avoid and defend against the invasion and the accompanying plagues.  They never converted. They've continued to practice their traditional Peyote Religion into the present.  They make annual pilgrimages to holy places in the 4 corners of their territory.

The artists that contribute to our store live in their homelands and practice their culture.
