Hand carved red cedar with abalone eyes. The handle is a miniature totem pole with a wildman and a raven carved on it.  A butterfly is carved in relief on the back of the head.  The mask represents Kumukwa, the Chief of the undersea world. His name means ‘Wealthy One’.  He has a treasure house under the sea that’s guarded by the octopus.  When he rises above the sea his head is so big that it looks like an island.  Kumukwa can see the future, heal the sick, and grant powers to humans.  Those that have visited his home were richly rewarded with blankets, coppers, songs and masks - also with spirit magic.

Master Carver Jimmy Joseph is Kwak'waka'wakw from Alert Bay.  He is a fourth generation carver.
