Carved by Mathew Baker (Squamish / Kwak'waka'wakw), this wide sterling silver cuff depicts a mother and two cubs rendered in bold Northwest Coast formline. Each bear carries a single hand-carved 14 kt gold eye, its warm tone striking against the deep silver relief.

The background is rendered fine, dense cross-hatching, a technique that contrasts with the smooth, polished bodies of the bears. Nested ovoids, circles and flowing U-forms mark each joint, a traditional way of showing the strength and connectedness running through the animals’ bodies. The teeth are depicted, giving each bear head real presence and weight.

Among Northwest Coast peoples, the bear is a crest of protection and strength, but bears are also known for their close bond between parent and young — a mother bear teaches her cub everything it needs to survive. Facing one another on this cuff, the two bears speak to that relationship: guardianship, patience, and the passing of knowledge from one generation to the next.
