Killer whale families remain close all through their lives.  They are matriarchal and matrilineal,  and both males and females, and their daughters children stay with their mother their entire lives.  Their lifespan is about 60 years.  Mothers carry their calves up to 18 months, and babies depend on their mother’s milk for 1 - 2 years.  Mothers continue to feed their sons fish after they’ve become adults.  When males fight mothers back their sons up.  Females live up to 20 years after menopause, functioning as Matriarchs caring for and instructing their family in how to hunt.  In 2018 a mother carried her dead calf for 17 days and over 1000 miles. She was mourning and grieving her chid. They are a great symbol of motherhood.
