The 6 Stages of the Salmon Life Cycle

 

1. During the fall female salmon deposit 1000’s of eggs into her nest.  They are fertilized by a male, then covered with gravel. They stay buried in freshwater streams throughout the winter. 
2. In early spring they hatch and live in their nest while eating from an attached yolk sac.
3. Once the yolk sac is used up the fry leave their nests to find food.  They develop camouflage stripes to protect them.
4. Smolts leave their streams and head toward the ocean.  They undergo a transformation to help them adapt to the ocean - their camo disappears replaced by silver and they change internally to be able to breathe in salt water.
5. Adults live their lives in the ocean for 1 to 7 years depending on the species.
6. Near the end of their lives they fight their way back to the streams where they were born.  During the journey they don’t eat and their bodies change.  Sockey turn crimson with green heads.  When they reach home females lay eggs and males fertilize them.  Within days of spawning they die.  Their bodies break sown and enrich the total environment
