The octopus is an intelligent undersea being with eight arms, nine brains, three hearts, and blue blood. They are masters of camouflage that can change the colour, pattern and texture of their skin to blend with their environment. This ability to transform their appearance connects the octopus to shamanism, and the power of the spirit world. In Kwak’waka’wakw stories he guards the house of Kumukwa, the wealthy Chief of the undersea world. Northwest coast Indigenous stories tell of another world under the sea populated by spiritual beings. In the past humans had crossed over into that world, stayed there for a period, then returned bringing back stories, dances, ceremonies, and spiritual knowledge.
The octopus is a significant clan crest among some northern Nations.
