Butterfly is a companion and guide to the Raven in Northwest Coast Raven Tales. He was with Raven from the beginning and was there when Raven discovered the first humans and placed them on earth. He often leads Raven to food sources and or to hiding places of creatures concealed from him. He also acts as a spokesperson for Raven. From the human point of view, butterfly is a messenger, a bridge to the spirit world. The cooperation between Butterfly and Raven illustrates the interconnectedness and balance in nature.
The butterfly is also a symbol of transformation. Each stage of life is one of transformation. Transformation from a baby to a child, a child to youth, youth to an adult, and adult to elder. The story of butterfly is told to children about becoming teenagers. They watch their older siblings and friends transform from tiny caterpillar playmates to beautiful strong butterflies. They become strong and fly away. And one day you will be the role model, that being whose footsteps the smaller children will follow. As you grow and become free of bonds, and stretch your wings in the sunshine. You'll become stronger and more beautiful. You’ll stretch your wings and fly for the first time. You’ll soar and flutter from flower to flower.
