Richard Shorty was born in Whitehorse, Yukon in 1959. He belongs to the Northern Tutchone People and his crest is the crow. He began drawing and painting at a young age. In the early 80's, he started developing his own style that mixes northwest coast Native designs with realistic painting. He paints on paper and canvas, and also on drums, jackets, and pretty well any surface. Richard has done many large wall murals in Vancouver and elsewhere. Richard Shorty currently lives most of the year in Vancouver.
