Steam bentwood box constructed, carved and painted with Traditional Coast Salish (Nanaimo) design by Willliam Good. The dimensions are 10"x9"x9".
The four sides of a bentwood box are made of one sheet steamed and bent. The open corner is dowelled or attached with copper nails. Then it's attached to the base and the lid is fitted on. This type of box traditionally had many uses - storage, shipping, cooking. They are used today as art objects or for storing precious things.
The artist, William Good is a Snuneymuxw Hereditary Chief from Nanaimo. He has spent his life revitalizing traditional Coast Salish Snuneymuxw style art. He has recently been rewarded for his work with an honorary Doctorate of letters from VIU.
