Yellow cedar paddle carved and painted by Lawrence Scow. Traditional Kwak'waka'wakw design.
The paddle has a killer whale carved and painted on the blade. The whale has a raven design on the side fin. It's tail fin has a human head on it. These designs illustrate the close relationship between humans and animals in Native cultures. A thunderbird is designed on the handle. Killer whales and thunderbirds are often paired in west coast Native art. There are many stories of epic battles between the two.
