Crows are very intelligent. They have the ability to solve problems, use tools, and remember human faces. Some Indigenous communities see them as messengers from the spirit world that bring benefit to humans. This contrasts with western culture and it's negative associations with crows. The crow is respected for its intelligence, adaptability, and role as a messenger.
The crow is a clan crest in some Dakelh communities like the Wet'suwet'en. Among the Inland Tlingit there are two moieties, the Crow and the Eagle. In a matrilineal system a person's moiety is inherited from their mother. A person from the Raven moiety must marry someone from the Eagle moiety, and vice versa. There are also many sub-crests or clans.
