The salmon give themselves to sustain people, bears, eagles, wolves and many other forms of life on the west coast. This includes the giant cedar trees that receive nutrients from the soil that’s enriched by the salmon parts left after this feeding. The life cycle of the salmon reflects the Indigenous circular view of life. The four salmon painted on the drum represent the four stages of a salmon’s life.
The eagle signifies leadership, wisdom and vision. The eagle’s literal exceptional vision reflects a spiritual quality. A common crest image is an eagle holding a salmon in its talons representing the abundance of the territory. On totem poles the eagle is often carved on top with the salmon at the bottom. This represents the natural world from the heights of the sky to the depths of the ocean.
