The design comes from Chilkat blankets which are highly valued handmade northwest coast blankets. They are worn as regalia by Chiefs during ceremonial meetings and dances.
Chilkat weaaving is one of the most complex weaving styles known. It takes more than a year to create one. They are made of mountain goat wool and cedar bark. Owning and wearing a chilkat blanket involves a lot of prestige and requires hereditary rights. Their production is enjoying a revival.
