The moon is a common design element in northwest coast Native art. It's obviously a dominant image in the night sky and a force that affects the tides. The moon is associated with the female cycle and is a part pf women's ceremonies. In Native culture the moon is a being sometimes called grandmother moon. In art the moon is often portrayed with wolves that are night hunters. Raven placed the moon and stars in the sky.
Repoussé is used to shape a piece of metal by working on the reverse of the metal with hammers and punches to form a raised design on the front. Chasing is is the opposite technique used to refine the design on the front of the work by hammering to sink the metal.
