This striking 42 inch Kwak'waka'wakw Welcome Man figure, expertly carved and painted by master artist Jimmy Joseph, embodies the powerful Wren spirit.
This unique piece depicts Wren, a spiritual being whose appearance and characteristics are part human and part bird. A human face is carved on the back of the wren's head. The figure is hollowed to make it light and to prevent cracking. The moveable arms extend in a welcoming gesture.
Perched atop Wren’s head is a kingfisher, an ancient being whose history stretches back two million years. They are admired for their agility and speed, their exceptional fishing prowess, and their territorial nature. Kingfishers will hover then dive 20 - 40 feet straight into the water. They are recognized by their distinctive blue/black and white plumage and rattling call.
Jimmy Joseph's signature style, marked by intricate detail and bold dashing is evident throughout the carving. This pole is carved and painted all the way around 360'. Traditionally, Welcome Man figures stood guard at village entrances, acting as territorial markers and symbols of hospitality. This piece beautifully showcases the rich artistic heritage of the Kwagiulth people.
