The Spirit Bear is a unique white species of black bear that lives on the northcoast of BC which is known as the Great Bear Rainforest.  Salmon is their primary food source in the fall when it's plentiful.  These bears have a special cultural significance to the Indigenous people of the area who until recently kept their existence a secret in order to keep them safe.  Raven made one in ten black bears white to remind people of the time when the earth was covered in ice and snow, and also to represent peace, harmony and balance.  Spirit bears are faced with threats to their existence due to loss of habitat and competition for resources.
