Lawrence Scow, born in 1958 in Fort Rupert near Port Hardy, British Columbia, is a celebrated member of the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation. Growing up in a family with a rich legacy of carvers, Lawrence was surrounded by the traditions of his ancestors. He initially pursued a career as a commercial fisherman which he has continued to practice. This lifelong connection to the sea granted him an intimate understanding of the coastal environment and its inhabitants, deeply influencing his artistic perspective. In 1985, inspired by the works of renowned carvers Bill Wilson and Larry Hunt, Lawrence began his journey as a carver, embracing his cultural heritage and artistic lineage.
Known for his meticulous attention to detail and elegant, flowing lines, Lawrence’s carvings are more than mere objects—they are profound expressions of Kwakwaka’wakw culture and spirituality. Each piece reflects his deep respect for the natural world and the traditions of his people, blending technical skill with storytelling.
