Indigenous art by Tlingit artist Calvin Morberg. 18" long, 6.5" wide, 4" high. A Feast Bowl. The figures on the bowl are eagles in human form - somewhere between human and animal.
"Our people kept our traditions alive in their hearts and our art survived to help us reclaim and regain our spiritual heritage, traditional knowledge and connections and with spiritual power conveyed by and through art". Calvin Morberg
The artist began with a flat sheet of heavy copper and created this artwork through repousse and chasing. Repousse is a technique in which the surface of the metal is pushed up, raised from behind using a number of different punches and tools to create a three dimensional design. Chasing accomplishes the opposite effect, creates details by pushing the surface down. The two techniques work together to make a three dimensional piece of art.
