The Haida have lived for thousands of years on the ocean’s shore. The ocean has provided their sustenance and their transportation routes. Their oral history tells of their islands emerging from the ocean, and of the Haida people being born from a clamshell. The differences between humans and other beings, and the boundaries between the land and the undersea are seen as being fluid in Haida oral history and traditional culture. People and animals transform into each other. The sea is a sacred territory filled with life and cared for by supernatural beings. The sea chief is often accompanied by creatures of the sea such as the octopus, sea lion or starfish in descriptions or images. Copper and abalone represent his immense wealth.
