A miniature argillite carving with seven abalone inlays 1 1/2' high with a 1/4" bale. By Haida master artist Jay Simeon. Watchmen looking out in all directions.
Three Haida Watchmen traditionally are carved at the top of totem poles depicting guardians or lookouts. Watchmen were stationed at high points near villages to observe and warn of any approaching enemies. Symbolically they represent Haida awareness and watchfulness and the desire to protect Haida people, territory, property and culture. They also have a spiritual aspect guarding against bad medicine.
Currently they also represent the ‘Haida Gwaii Watchmen Program’, a project meant to protect Haida cultural sites and the Haida environment. Program members are also cultural ambassadors sharing traditional knowledge. The three watchmen represent the continuity of Haida guardianship.
